John Edward Gray.

John Edward Gray es un zoologista britanic, nascut lo 12 de febrièr 1800 a Walsall e mòrt lo 7 de març de 1875. Es lo fraire ainat de George Robert Gray, tanben zoologista. Lor paire es Samuel Frederick Gray (1766-1828), un farmacològ e un botanista renomat a son epòca.

Sa familha s'installa pro lèu a Londres ont Gray comença d'estudiar la medecina a 16 ans. Deven l'assistent de son paire quand aqueste redigís The Natural Arrangement of British Plants (1821). Aprèp èsser estat refusat a la Societat Linneana de Londres, se desvira de la botanica e se consagra a la zoologia. Trabalha, a partir de 1824, al departament de zoologia del British Museum ont ajuda John George Children a la redaccion del catalòg de las colleccions de reptils. En 1840, remplaça Children al pòst de conservator d'aqueste departament, foncion qu'ocuparà fins a Nadal de 1874.

Publica mantun catalòg de las colleccions del musèum, ont analisa los gropes animals mas tanben descriu d'espècias novèlas. Participa activament a l'enriquiment de las colleccions de zoologia del British Museum que deven demest las mai importantas del mond. S'estima qu'un milion d'especimens suplementaris venon s'ajustar a las colleccions durant la direccion de Gray.

Publica de títols fòrt nombroses, gaireben 1200, principalament en zoologia. S'agís sovent de catalògs repetitius e mancant d'analisi critica. En 1832, deven membre de la Royal Society.

Gray s'interèssa tanben a la filatelia. Lo 1èr de mai de 1840, quand lo primièr Penny Black es mes en venda, ne fa l'aquisicion de mantun exemplar, devenent atal lo primièr filatelista del mond. Sembla que siá estat un dels primièrs que prepausèron un taus d'afranquiment unifòrme per los mandadisses postals, preparant atal la venguda del timbre.

Lo cranquièr de Gray (Ardeola grayii), de la familha dels bernats pescaires (Ardeidae), li es estat dedicat pel coronèl William Henry Sykes (1790-1872).
