David Syme, 1907. CHARACTERISTICS 267 broke bounds, and the experiment gave him thegreatest possible delight. He was travelling atthe moment to Hong Kong on one of the Japanesemail-steamers. The Captain, an Englishman, didnot know Syme, and it seems had conceived some-what of an aversion to his distinguished passenger.At any rate, Syme, who sat next to him at table,found it impossible to engage the Captain in conver-sation or to extract from him the least attention orcivility. About the middle of the voyage Symewent one afternoon on deck, which was for the mo-ment deserted, and, after a short stroll seated him-self upon an unoccupied deck chair. Five minuteslater a quartermaster touched him on the arm. If you please, sir, said the man, you aresitting on the Captains chair. Syme looked up. Oh ! And does the Captainwant it ? he inquired.
