Un ipopotam anfibi en captivitat.
L'ipopotam (en latin hippopotamus, en grèc ἵππόποταμος = hippopotamos, literalament « caval del flume ») es un mamifèr erbivòr d'Africa, que son pes pòt anar fins a 4 tonas. Es un dels dos membres de la familha Hippopotamidae; l'autre es l'ipopotam nan, Choeropsis liberiensis.
Passa lo jorn en grops dins l'aiga doça e la fanga, amor que[1], en transpirar fòrça mai que la pus granda part dels animals, es vulnerable a las insolacions. Pòt tancar las nasicas e demorar submergit durant 10 minutas, e es fòrça agil dins l'aiga. S'alimenta sus la tèrra fèrma, ingereís fins a 50 kg cada jorn, abitualament de nuèit.
Malgrat son aire innocent, es un dels animals mai perilhós per l'òme, essent lo mai mortifèr d'Africa. Sos ulhals que li servon pas a res per manjar, mas que pòdon nafrar los enemics gravament, mesuran 50 cm. Corrís fins a 45 km/h.
Coneissètz lo famós badalh de l'ipopotam ? La musculatura de la maissa li permèt d'alandar la boca d'un biais impressionant.
La jornada tota passa son temps dins l'aiga a badalhar e a dormir. Una vida complicada!
On trouve cet énorme animal en Asie, en Europe mais surtout en Afrique. Les hippopotames vivent en groupes sur un territoire, une portion de lac ou de rivière.
