Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. **All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be very low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)**

Plantilla para los meses

En Genièr usáis la plantilla Modèl:Calendièr del mes/Genièr, y así en todos los meses. Pero los meses siempre empiezan por lunes. En cambio en la Wikipedia en español tenemos unas plantillas que funcionan con todos los años y no hace falta estar cambiándolas todos los años. Tenemos 7 plantillas y cada una indica el día un día distinto en el que empieza el día de la semana aquí están todas y en podéis ver un ejemplo es:Plantilla:Mayo. Lo malo es que en la Wikipedia en español estas plantillas están configuradas para que el primer día de semana sea el domingo, pero en la Wikipedia en gallego y catalana empieza por lunes gl:Categoría:Wikipedia:Modelos de calendarios y ca:Categoria:Plantilles de navegació de calendari. Wikimedia sites to move to primary data center in Ashburn, Virginia. Read-only mode expected.

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) Next week, the Wikimedia Foundation will transition its main technical operations to a new data center in Ashburn, Virginia, USA. This is intended to improve the technical performance and reliability of all Wikimedia sites, including this wiki. There will be some times when the site will be in read-only mode, and there may be full outages; the current target windows for the migration are January 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2013, from 17:00 to 01:00 UTC (see other timezones on timeanddate.com). First. I'm sorry if I write on the wrong place, and in english. Please move this to the correct place. The Swedish Wikipedia was warned some day ago for user:68.3.67.81. That ip is banned on enwp because it creats a lot of stubbs (small articles) that are mixed between fake and correct. I checked the svwp and found out that it writes a lot of articles like "Rosearik Rikki Simons es un conegut actor American de comèdias del cinèma." (linking to imdb. and all are comedians.) Roserik exists, as seen on enwp, but take a closer look. He is not a comedian. The ip is now banned on svwp and we are checking its contributions. Best regards. Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

• Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
• For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Recent software changes

• The latest version of MediaWiki (version 1.22/wmf4) was added to non-Wikipedia wikis on May 13, and to the English Wikipedia (with a Wikidata software update) on May 20. It will be updated on all other Wikipedia sites on May 22. [8] [9]
• A software update will perhaps result in temporary issues with images. Please report any problems you notice. [10]
• MediaWiki recognizes links in twelve new schemes. Users can now link to SSH, XMPP and Bitcoin directly from wikicode. [11]
• VisualEditor was added to all content namespaces on mediawiki.org on May 20. [12]
• A new extension ("TemplateData") was added to all Wikipedia sites on May 20. It will allow a future version of VisualEditor to edit templates. [13]
• New sites: Greek Wikivoyage and Venetian Wiktionary joined the Wikimedia family last week; the total number of project wikis is now 794. [14] [15]
• The logo of 18 Wikipedias was changed to version 2.0 in a third group of updates. [16]
• The UploadWizard on Commons now shows links to the old upload form in 55 languages (bug 33513). [17]

Future software changes

Bot created stubs

This wiki has just passed 80 000 articles, mainly due to the creation of thousands of stubs by BoulaurBot. A small sampling of these stubs reveals that most are of very little value. For example, Epsilon Canis Majoris (a star) has been defined as "un luòc" (a place) in that article's single sentence. Adishatz, avetz vist (o pas) qu'ei creat mei de 12 000 paginas en 8 jorns damb las informacions de Wikidata.

Pensi que per la nòstra petita wikipèdia cau crear contengut ligat a las informacions de Wikidata perque:

• Som pas nombroses tà augmentar lo nombre d'articles,
• Las informacions de Wikidata son botadas, melhoradas e mesas a jorn damb l'ajuda de totes los wikipèdians,
• Un ligam rotge balha mens d'informacions qu'ua pagina minimalista que compren a minima los interwikis e es melhorada sens intervencion si las donadas de Wikidata son cambiadas.

Aquestes creacions d'esbòsses semblan pas una bona idèa per los utilizaires dcljr (d), Vogone (SWMT) e Snowolf ^{How can I help?} perque:

Unei questions que necessitariá una discussion fòrça lònga. Premier, la nòstra wikipèdia es una wikipèdia pichona. Pas negligibla mai segondària quin que sigue lo critèri de mesura : totau d'articles (~ 52^en), totau d'articles dins la categoria lenga romana (9^en/30) ò tièra dei 1000 articles fondamentaus (40^en). Lo nòstre desvolopament es donc una question centrala per assaiar de gardar aquela plaça e, subretot, per la melhorar. Enfin, sariá estat melhor d'èstre capables d'organizar aqueu debat sensa necessitar l'intervencion d'utilizaires estrangiers. Donc per te respòndre :

• A l'ora d'ara, Wikidata es una catastròfa. Per exemple, i a quauquei setmanas avans ma correccion, lo país de naissença de Ramon Berenguier V de Provença èra França (amb una referéncia !!!). Pasmens, as rason de considerar que Wikidata sarà melhorada gràcias a l'ajuda de totei lei comunautats (es a dire subretot per leis anglofòns...). Pense donc que Wikidata represente ben un avenir interessant e que la « catastròfa » actuala es solament provisòria. Wikidata es donc pas lo problema vertadier. Au contrari, es una oportunitat de s'avançar.
• En revènge, siáu pas d'acòrd ambé l'afirmacion « ligam rotge balha mens d'informacions qu'ua pagina minimalista » ò alora, fau definir lo tèrme « minimalista ». Ansin, pòdi destriar tres tipes d'esbós dins lei creacions de ton bot. Lo premier es lo tipe "Comuna de França" (ex : Vòus, Aupedeta...), la segonda lo tipe "comuna fòra França" (ex : Mura, Sant Cugat Sesgarrigues) e lo tresen lo tipe de la setmana darriera (ex : Capellini, Bleed It Out...).
  • lo premier tipe entraïna de problema de lectura : es pas bèu, lo tèxte occitan es mau escrich en causa deis errors de la traduccion automatica e la màger part de l'article es escrich en francés. Es donc inutil car un utilizaire francés — e la màger part deis occitanofòns son encara francés — trobarà mai d'informacions dins l'article francés.
  • lo tresen tipe es una pagina pas un article ni un esbós : es mau escrich, sovent incomprensible e de còps faus (ex : Epsilon Ursae Majoris es una estèla e non un luòc). Per ièu, es inutil e, subretot, es d'escafar.
  • lo segond tipe es perfèct : clar, corrèct amb una frasa. Per ièu, aquò representa una pagina « minimalista ».

En conclusion, siáu — d'un biais generau — en favor de la qualitat e non de la talha de la nòstra wikipèdia. La quantitat es pas presada generalament actualament e servís pas de res de far una clòsca se i a pas res dedins. Cal saber limitar las creacions d'aquesta mena a 10 per jorn, pas mai. Un dels paramètres a tenir en compte es la densitat (o prigondor; en anglés depth) e actualament es de 5, çò que fa d'aquesta Wikipèdia una de las mai flacas de totas. I aguèt ja de problèmas amb aquelas creacions fachas pel Boulaurbot (en realitat mai que lo bòt lo problèma es la creacion d'articles vuèges), se contunhatz aital e mai siá manualament anatz crear de problèmas e los autres administradors començaràn a pèrdre paciéncia e podrián escafar un brave tropèl d'articles (una ingeréncia serà probablament mal viscuda a mai...), çò que vulnerabilizarà mai encara aquesta enciclopèdia. Personalament, davant los problèmas causats per aquesta realitat ai ensajat de montar/aumentar la densitat mas se se crèan mai d'articles que los que pòdi melhorar serà pas possible d'anar mai enlà d'una densitat de 5 e farem rire de pertot... pas sonque la Wikipèdia mas los occitans en general... Vos vòli remembrar qu'una de las tòcas essencialas de l'aisina es d'aver un lectorat e de lo consolidar, e puèi se podèm captar mai d'utilizaires va plan, mas se la qualitat es magrinèla e los articles bufècs vesi pas ont anam? Adieu, en realitat es pas corrècte, es pas la wikipèdia alemanda mas la neerlandesa (çò qu'es una diferéncia màger!) qu'es a 9, "Dutch" en anglés es neerlandés contràriament a "Deutsch" (en alemand; German en anglés), çò que portèt a la confusion los quites americans que sonan "Pennsylvania Dutch" en realitat de populacions d'origina alemanda... Per çò que ne sabi la wikipèdia neerlandesa es pas gaire presada (èra plan mai en bas e es probablament, almens en part, çò que nomenan una "botopèdia"); un wikipedian neerlandés demandèt un jorn a la wiki anglesa un intervencionisme per i donar de qualitat e/o l'arrestar... Senon, soi d'acòrdi sul demai, cal estructurar e mai aver una estructura per melhorar tot aquò e atirar de gents. Lo calcul de la densitat pòt èsser criticable, ne sabi pas pro mas bon pensi que deu reflectir mai o mens, al delà de la repeticion d'edicions o de las paginas d'utilizaires, una densitat mai o mens aproximativa. Aquí, es pas possible de contunhar aital, tre que picas las paginas aleatòrias te tròbas amb quicòm qu'es nimai un esbòç, de còps sonque un mot o mai una frasa sovent incorrècta del tipe "Marcamau es un òme"... me fa gaireben plorar. Cal doncas moderar aquò drasticament, pas crear mai de 10 paginas d'aquesta mena per jorn per nos laissar de temps per aprigondir los esbòsses que son ja tròp nombroses... e representan gaireben mai de 20% de la Wikipèdia. Speak up about the trademark registration of the Community logo.

Hi all,

Please join the consultation about the Community logo that represents Meta-Wiki: m:Community Logo/Request for consultation.

This community consultation was commenced on September 24. The following day, two individuals filed a legal opposition against the registration of the Community logo.

The question is whether the Wikimedia Foundation should seek a collective membership mark with respect to this logo or abandon its registration and protection of the trademark.

We want to make sure that everyone get a chance to speak up so that we can get clear direction from the community. We would therefore really appreciate the community's help in translating this announcement from English so that everyone is able to understand it.

Introducting Beta Features

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. It will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki this Thursday, 7 November. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

• Media Viewer — view images in large size or full screen
• VisualEditor Formulæ (for wikis with VisualEditor) — edit algebra or equations on your pages
• Typography Refresh — make text more readable (coming Thursday)

VisualEditor coming to Occitan Wikipedia

VisualEditor is coming to the Occitan Wikipedia; the chosen date is January 13th. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ and ]] to link to another page). It is already available and in use on some Wikipedia projects. Please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information.

When this software arrives, you will have the option to use it or to use the current wikitext editor. When you press "edit", you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "edit source". For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

It is important that editors on this wiki test the new editor before it is deployed. This would let us know about any serious issues specific to this Wikipedia before the rollout. To enable VisualEditor now, go to the "Beta tab", and check the box for VisualEditor. Please let us know if you find any problems. If you're willing and able, please report the issue in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. If you would prefer not, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org. Pro d'escafament! Caldriá ensajar d'aver un pauc de coeréncia per plaser!

Adieu a totes, Francament sabi pas mai de qué far... Fa una brava mesada que passi mon temps a espepissar e a ensajar de salvar los esbòces d'articles per davalar pas tròp de posicions sulpic e ensajar de montar la densitat dels articles e puèi paf-cataclòc, vaquí que n'i a qu'an de tissas e escafan tot aquò d'un biais maquinesc que francament sabi pas çò que nos pòt portar... aprèp qu'empachèsse que d'espepissaire de las pichonas wikis de procedir aital (o aguèsse sabut!!!)..., pensi que val mai ensajar de completar dos o tres d'aqueles esbòces cada jorn que de los escafar aital, que d'unes coma Michael Bloomberg son d'articles qu'an sa plaça... Vesi pas ont anam..., se segur anam ont que siá... fa pas gaire que soi tornat e ja comenci de me descorar tornarmai... Compreni pas aquela tissa basada sus l'incomunicacion prigonda entre totes nosautres (còsta de ne parlar abans de metre lo bandieron "per escafar"?), quand fa sabi pas quand de temps que los articles son aital dins una indiferéncia gaireben generala fins a mos comentaris que malastrosament faguèron partir Boulaur... Far aital nos pòt far sonque mai de mal que de ben. Après aver trantalhat un moment, ai decidit de desactivar lo modèl actual d'Infobox desvolopat per Boulaur pr'amor que lo desvolopament es pas acabat e que vesèm un fum de messatges d'error sus gaireben cada pagina de la wikipèdia occitana.

• errors script error dins cada infobox - sembla que los escripts son tròp complicats per èsser executats pro rapidament
• las famosas errors Failed to render property 39 per manca de valor après tematica=.

Lo modèl Infobox {{Modèl:Infobox}} es estat vueitat e la version precedenta renommada {{Modèl:Infoboxdecorregir}}.

Es una bona causa d'automatizar, mas o far per emplenar la wp d'articles de mal legir, a mitat revirats, amb de messatges en rotge, cresi pas qu'aquò faga abançar las causas.
